- Perspective taking is considered a significant component of effective interpersonal functioning. Relational Frame Theory (RFT), a contemporary behavioural account, suggests the development of perspective taking is underpinned by patterns of relational responding in accordance with a family of deictic frames. It has been proposed that individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may have deficits in perspective taking. A mixed experimental design (N = 112) was used to assess whether individuals with a diagnosis of BPD displayed impaired perspective taking on a computerised RFT deictic task and reduced self-reported perspective taking, compared to a control sample. Findings did not show a significant difference between groups on the computerised RFT Deictic Relational Task (DRT). Within the clinical group, overall distress and relational distress were not found to be significant covariates or correlates of DRT performance and self-reported perspective taking. However, a significant difference was found between groups on a self-report measure of perspective taking, such that those with BPD reported worse perspective taking ability compared to the control sample. This finding indicates a discrepancy between perceived perspective taking ability and direct perspective taking performance in persons with BPD. Replication of the current study is required in order to confirm that persons with BPD do not have a deficit in perspective taking.
